Spiritus preparing for Magnificat: Baroque Christmas Favourites, featuring the music of Bach, Charpentier, Handel and Carelli.

Since its founding by Artistic Director Kenneth Hull in 2009, Spiritus Ensemble has performed over 25 of Bach’s cantatas, as well as motets and other works by J.S. Bach, Johann Christoph Bach, Vivaldi, Schütz, Buxtehude, Homilius, Bruhns, Kuhnau, Rheinberger, Benjamin Britten, James MacMillan, and Morten Lauridsen.

Many of Spiritus Ensemble’s Bach cantata performances take place within a liturgical context, accompanied by the readings on which they were intended as commentary as well as congregational chorales and hymns. These events form an ongoing series of ‘Bach Vespers’ with free admission performances at which donations are welcomed.

Other performances are more like traditional concerts, though often with an underlying liturgical or ritual shape. The performances in this series are our ‘In Concert’ events. Admission to these is by purchased ticket.

Other performances are more like traditional concerts, though often with an underlying liturgical or ritual shape. The performances in this series are our ‘In Concert’ events. Admission to these is by purchased ticket.

Musical Flora Concert 5: Autumn & Angus

  • The Church of St. John the Evangelist (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A concert series at St.John the Evangelist in Kitchener.

Every concert is as a flower, a bouquet, a garden, a place for musical communion, contemplation, exposure and pleasure.

The series updates a tradition which begins at the time of Frescobaldi (17th century), for example with his Fiori Musicali, of extended works - or in this case a concert series - which represent a diversity of musical forms. Today that diversity is far vaster, vast enough to include non-western classical traditions, popular genres, ancient and new, experimental music, computer music, improvisation … .

Concert 5 June 30. Autumn Debassige and Angus Sinclair.

The art of popular song, and the pop of art song!

Music for the Solar Eclipse: Fauré Requiem & Lapierre One Thousand Shields of Gold

In celebration of the solar eclipse, we are proud to announce the upcoming premiere of Justin Lapierre’s One Thousand Shields of Gold!
After 2024, we will not experience another total solar eclipse in our part of the world for over a century; this new choral work meditates on what our Earth will have become by that time.
Paired with Justin’s new work is Fauré’s Requiem, a musical depiction of the “flight of the soul to heaven” that explores the interplay between light and dark.
Mark your calendars for 1 and 2 June to celebrate and reflect upon this monumental event with both new and old music!

Ben Wallace, conductor

Cassandra Amorim, soprano
Autumn Debassige, mezzo-soprano
Grace Ronan, mezzo-soprano
Zander Bechard, tenor
Dante Mullin Santone, baritone

featuring choir and chamber orchestra
